Phillip Cockrell was named associate vice president for student life and dean of students at Jackson State University in Mississippi. He was director of student life at the Mississippi University for Women.
Dr. Cockrell is a graduate of Mississippi University for Women. He holds a master’s degree from Florida International University in Miami and a doctorate in urban higher education from Jackson State University.
Tyson Beale was appointed associate dean of the University College at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. He had been serving as a network student support administrator for nine schools in Baltimore, Maryland.
A native of Virginia Beach, Dr. Beale holds a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Radford University. He earned an educational doctorate at Morgan State University.
Dewain L. Lee, dean of students and associate vice chancellor for student development at the University of Alaska at Anchorage, was elected to the national board of directors of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest collegiate honor society.
Dr. Lee is the former dean of students at Dillard University in New Orleans. She holds a doctorate from Capella University.
Albert E. Smith Jr. was named deputy director of the National Public Housing Museum and the Center for the Study of Housing and Society in Chicago. He is the former director of student affairs at the Art Institute of Nashville and the former assistant director of residence life and residential education at Vanderbilt University.
Smith is a magna cum laude graduate of Fisk University in Nashville. He holds a master’s degree in theological studies from Vanderbilt University, where he is currently completing a doctorate.
Edwin Mayes is the new director of first-year experience at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He was the director of first-year experience at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
Mayes holds a bachelor’s degree in operations management and supervision from Wright State University.
