Bowdoin Professor Wins Book Award From the New York State Historical Association

Brian J. Purnell, an assistant professor of Africana studies at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, has been awarded the 2012 Dixon Ryan Fox Manuscript Prize by the New York State Historical Association. The prize is given to the best book-length manuscript relating to the history of New York State.

Dr. Purnell’s book, A Movement Grows in Brooklyn: The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Civil Rights Movement in Brooklyn, New York, is scheduled for publication in 2013 by the University Press of Kentucky.

Dr. Purnell is a graduate of Fordham University. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from New York University.
