New Research Center on Urban Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has announced plans to establish the Research Center for Urban Education Leadership on campus this summer. The new center will be housed in the department of administrative leadership of the university’s School of Education. The new center will assist administrators in urban elementary and secondary schools, as well as administrators at the college and university level, improve their leadership practices.

The new center will be under the direction of Alfonzo Thurmond, a professor of administrative leadership and former dean of the School of Education. “Numerous studies have shown that strong leadership is critical in the success of schools, particularly in urban areas,” says Professor Thurman. “The mission of this center will be to conduct applied and empirical research and provide evaluations and assessments to inform school leadership about best practices in school leadership and assist them in adapting those practices.”

Dr. Thurman is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
