In Memoriam: Michel-Rolph Trouillot, 1949-2012

Michel-Rolph Trouillot, a professor of anthropology at the University of Chicago, died of complications from an aneurism suffered several years ago. He was 62 years old.

A native of Haiti, Professor Trouillot came to the United States at the age of 20 and nine years later received a bachelor’s degree in Caribbean history and culture at the City University of New York. He published his first book on the Haitian revolution while he was an undergraduate student. In 1985 he earned a Ph.D. in anthropology at Johns Hopkins University.

He taught at Johns Hopkins before joining the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1998. In 2011, he was awarded the Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association.

  1. Thank you, JBHE, for what you do to let us know of people, their lives, and their works. I will now read/appreciate the works of Dr. Trouillot. As described, he did well in his short life. Role model, contributor, scholar we frequently hear nothing about. Same for the illustrious Bill Raspberry.
