Claflin University Appoints Its First Provost

Claflin University, the historically Black educational institution in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has announced that for the first time in its 143-year history it will have a provost. Karl S. Wright has been named to the new post.

Dr. Wright has been serving as provost at the University of the Virgin Islands. There, he was also the executive director of the Virgin Islands Academic and Cultural Awards Endowment. Previously, he was president of Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens and was dean of the business school at South Carolina State University.

Dr. Wright is a native of Jamaica. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degree at the University of Maryland at College Park and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Mississippi State University.
