Four Notable Appointments of African Americans in Higher Education

Lynette Overby, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Experimental Learning and professor of theatre at the University of Delaware, was elected to the governing board of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Dr. Overby joined the faculty at the University of Delaware in 2008. Previously, she was a professor and associate dean for outreach and engagement at Michigan State University.

Professor Overby is a graduate of Hampton University. She holds a master’s degree from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in kinesiology from the University of Maryland.

Gary Miller was named acting chief technology officer at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. A native of Tuskegee, Alabama, Miller moved to Fort Valley, Georgia, and as a middle school student interned in the university’s computer technology department.

Linda R. Melvin was named director of Student Health Services at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. She served for 13 years as a nurse in North Carolina public schools.

Melvin is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. She holds a master of divinity degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

J. Brenton Stewart has joined the faculty at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Southern Mississippi. He recently completed his doctorate in library and information science at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Stewart is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and holds a master’s degree from Clark Atlanta University.
