Five Black Scholars Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

E. Janyce Dawkins was named director of the Equal Opportunity Office at the University of Georgia. She has been serving as interim director since last July. Dawkins joined the university administration in 2008 as assistant director of the EOO. Previously, she was an assistant district attorney.

Dawkins holds a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the University of Louisiana Lafayette. She is also a graduate of the Florida State University School of Law.

Berenecea Johnson Eanes was appointed vice president for student affairs at California State University Fullerton. She has been serving as vice president for student affairs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a division of the City University of New York.

Dr. Eanes is a graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans. She holds a master of social work degree from Boston University and a doctorate in social work from Clark Atlanta University.

Nosa O. Egiebor was named vice president for international education, research, and development at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Dr. Egiebor has been on the faculty at Tuskegee since 1996, most recently holding the Samuel Massie/United States Department of Energy Chair in environmental engineering.

Professor Egiebor is a graduate of the University of Benin in Africa. He earned a master’s degree at the University of Manchester in England and a Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from Queen’s University in Canada.

Quentin R. Tyler was promoted to assistant dean for diversity and director of the Office for Diversity at the College of Agriculture of the University of Kentucky. He has been serving as an extension associate for recruitment and retention.

Dr. Tyler holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural economics and a Ph.D. in sociology, all from the University of Kentucky.

Donnell Butler was named senior associate dean for planning and analysis of student outcomes at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His appointment is effective on August 1.

Dr. Butler is an alumnus of Franklin and Marshall, where he majored in business administration and sociology. He earned a Ph.D. in sociology at Princeton University.

Lingering Mistrust From Tuskegee Syphilis Study Connected to COVID-19 Vaccine Reluctance

African Americans who lived within 750 miles of Tuskegee, Alabama, were more reluctant to receive the COVID-19 vaccine than their White neighbors, as well as Black Americans from other United States regions. The authors attribute this finding to lingering mistrust of public health services as a result of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study which ran from the 1930s to 1972.

Clayton State University Selects Corrie Fountain to Serve as Interim Provost

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve at Clayton State in this interim capacity, and I hope that my contributions will aid in the success of its students, faculty and staff," said Dr. Fountain, currently the associate provost for faculty affairs at Georgia State University.
