Central State University Clears a Big Hurdle in Effort to Achieve Land-Grant Status

The Ohio legislature has approved a measure that designates historically Black Central State University as a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act of 1890. The vote in the Ohio Senate was unanimous and the House voted 84-1 to approve the measure.

The United States Congress must now approve the designation which would allow Central State to apply for federal funding reserved for land-grant institutions.

John Garland, president of Central State University, stated, “Designation as a land-grant institution will provide more resources to Central State, enabling us to increase our teaching and research capacity in areas of science, technology, engineering, and math and enlarge our outreach and support to the surrounding area.”
