Athens State University Scholar Develops Diversity Enrichment Program for Teacher Education

Dr. Wanda Hutchinson, an associate professor of education at Athens State University in Alabama, has developed a program for preservice teacher candidates to improve teaching methods and to prepare teachers to be more sensitive to diverse cultures. Project DESIGN (Diverse Educators Sharing in a Global Network) seeks to prepare teachers for the increasingly diverse classrooms in today’s schools by promoting respect, sensitivity, and appreciation for differences in the human race.

To date, Dr. Hutchinson has established partnerships for Project Design with the Division of Education at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama, and the College of Education and Human Services at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hutchinson holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Alabama A&M University and a doctorate from the Mississippi State University. If you would like more information on Project DESIGN, you can email Dr. Hutchinson at wanda.hutchinson@athens.edu.
