Two Black Scholars Win Prestigious Awards

Victor W.A. Mbarika, the Houston Alumnae Endowed Professor at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cameroon Association of Engineers and Computer Scientists.

Dr. Mabarika is a graduate of the U.S. International University. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Ph.D. in management information systems from Auburn University.

Timuel Black, who spent four decades as a teacher in the Chicago public school system and as an administrator in the City College of Chicago system, was selected to receive the Benton Medal from the University of Chicago. He will be the 11th recipient of the Benton Medal, which honors extraordinary public service.

Black was a leader in the civil rights movement in Chicago. He is a graduate of Roosevelt University and earned a master’s degree at the University of Chicago. He is the author of Bridges of Memory (Northwestern University Press), a two-volume history of African Americans in Chicago.
