In Memoriam: Frank Toby Martin (1951-2012)

Toby Martin, a renowned sculptor and associate professor of art at Spelman College in Atlanta, died late last month. He was 60 years old.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, he graduated from Morehouse College in 1976. He earned a master of fine arts degree from Georgia State University’s sculpture program where his thesis was entitled, “Form From My Spirit in a Three-Dimensional World.”

Martin joined the faculty at Spelman College in 1987. Several of Professor Martin’s works are displayed on the Spelman College campus.

  1. I had no idea. I remember the many times Professor Martin invited his students into his studio not just to see his work… But to make our own art.

In Memoriam: Norman B. Anderson, 1955-2024

Dr. Anderson was the assistant vice president for research and academic affairs at Florida State University at the time of his death. He had an extensive career in clinical psychology, which led him to become the first African American chief executive officer of the American Psychological Association.
