Stony Brook University Offers New Master’s Degree Program in Africana Studies

Stony Brook University, on Long Island, is part of the State University of New York System. This fall the university will offer for the first time a master’s degree program in Africana studies.

The curriculum includes core courses, “Research Methods in Africana Studies” and “Foundations of Africana Studies.” The degree program requires 30 credit hours. Electives include courses such as “Women of Color in the Modern World,” “Contemporary African Diasporic Literature and Film,” and “The World of Atlantic Slavery.”

The graduate program director is Les H. Owens. Dr. Owens is the author of This Species of Property: Slave Life and Culture in the Old South (Oxford University Press).
