Howard University Students Win Energy Savings Competition

Howard University, the historically Black educational institution in the nation’s capital was the winner of the D.C. Campus Challenge sponsored by the Alliance to Save Energy. In a student-led campaign, the university reduced energy consumption by 14 percent, besting other area universities.

Howard students made a concerted effort to turn off lights in empty rooms and common areas. A “Study Buddy” network was established so students could study together in groups in one dormitory room while keeping the lights off in other dorm rooms. Using social media, posters, and educational pamphlets, Howard students promoted the energy saving campaign by encouraging all students to participate in the effort.

The overall one-month campaign in the Washington area saved over 168,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
