A Wide Range of Black Enrollments at CalState University Campuses

There are more than 21,000 African American students enrolled at the 23 campuses of California State University. They make up 5 percent of the more than 426,000 students enrolled at these university campuses.

There is a wide disparity in the level of Black enrollments at the 23 campuses. Blacks make up 19.5 percent of all enrollments at California State University Dominguez Hills. The only other campus where African Americans make up more than 10 percent of the student body is at the East Bay campus in Hayward. There, blacks are 10.4 percent of all enrollments.

Blacks are only 0.8 percent of the total enrollments at the San Luis Obispo campus. Blacks are less than two percent of all enrollments at the CalState campuses of Chico, Channel Islands, and Sonoma.

According to state law, all admissions decisions at state-operated universities in California are made without consideration of race.

  1. Thanks for sharing this information.

What is missing for me in the above chart is a comparison or an indication of the % of African Americans that are represented in the state’s overall population in addition to the number of students that actually are leaving the state to go to college elsewhere.
