Vanderbilt University Professor Wins Outstanding Book Award

H. Richard Milner IV, the Betts Associate Professor of Education and founding director of the Learning, Diversity, and Urban Studies graduate program at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University, will receive the 2012 Outstanding Book Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Dr. Milner will receive the award later this month at the AACTE annual meeting in Chicago. He is being honored for his book, Start Where You Are, But Don’t Stay There: Understanding Diversity, Opportunity Gaps, and Teaching in Today’s Classrooms (Harvard Education Press).

Dr. Milner holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from South Carolina State University. He earned a second master’s degree and a doctorate from Ohio State University. Before joining the Vanderbilt faculty in 2009, Dr. Milner taught at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
