Three African Americans Named to New Posts in Higher Education

Derek Carter was named special assistant to the executive vice president of finance at Delaware State University in Dover. He has been serving as director of athletics at the university. Before coming to Delaware State, he was the athletics director at Bowie State University and Virginia State University.

Carter is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and holds a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee.

Mary Williams was appointed director of the Students in Transition Engaged and Prepared for Success (STEPS) program at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She was vice president for student affairs at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens.

At Florida Memorial University, Dr. Williams also served as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and was on the faculty of the sociology department.

Johnny Whitehead was named director of public safety and chief of police at Rice University in Houston. He was the director of public safety and chief of police at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Chief Whitehead is a graduate of the University of Baltimore and the FBI National Academy. He holds a master’s degree in applied behavioral science from Johns Hopkins University.
