Racial Differences in Criminal Victimization in Schools

According to data released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice, 4.4 percent of African American students between the ages of 12 and 18 were victims of crimes while at school during the 2008-09 school year. The criminal victimization rate for African-American students was only slightly higher than the rate for white students and Hispanic students.

White students were more likely than African-American students to be victims of theft while at school. But African-American students were more likely than whites to be victims of violent crime. In the 2008-09 school year, 2.3 percent of African-American students were victims of violent crime in school. This was nearly double the rate for white students.
