Morgan State Legend Honored by the American Football Coaches Association

Edward P. Hurt, former head football coach at Morgan State University in Baltimore, received the 2011 Trailblazer Award from the American Football Coaches Association. The award honors early coaching pioneers at historically black colleges and universities.

After graduating from Howard University and coaching at Virginia Theological Seminary and College, Hurt began coaching at Morgan State in 1929 serving as head coach for football, basketball, and track and field. During his tenure as football coach, his team was undefeated 11 times. In 1943, his team did not allow its opponents a single point. From 1931 to 1938 his team won 54 games in a row.

Hurt coached the track team at Morgan State for more than 40 years and he produced eight NCAA champions. Hurt also served as director of athletics at Morgan State from 1958 to 1970.
