Three Flagship State Universities Report Black Enrollment Data

The Indiana University system reports record enrollments of more than 110,000 students this fall. There are 7,922 black students enrolled at the system’s eight campuses. They make up 7.2 percent of total enrollments. Blacks enrollments are down 0.4 percent from a year ago. Blacks are about 9 percent of the Indiana population.

There are 1,776 African-American students at the flagship campus in Bloomington, down 4.1 percent from 2010. Blacks make up 4.2 percent of the enrollments on the Bloomington campus. In contrast, blacks are 23.3 percent of the total enrollments at Indiana University Northwest in Gary.

At the flagship campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, there are 401 black first-year students on campus. This is up from 359 blacks in the entering class in 2010. That is an increase of 11.7 percent.

The University of Arkansas reports a 25 increase in the number of black freshmen on campus. There are 250 black first-year students on campus this fall. They make up 5.5 percent of the entering class.

For total enrollments, there are 1,246 African-American students on the University of Arkansas campus this fall. This is a 10.5 percent increase from a year ago.
