Four Black Scholars Named to New Posts

Thomas A. Parham was promoted to vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of California at Irvine. He has been serving in the position on an interim basis since September 2010. Previously he was assistant vice chancellor for counseling and health services at the university.

Dr. Parham is a graduate of the University of California at Irvine. He holds a master’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Sheridan Quarles Kingsberry was elected president of the Delaware Association of Social Workers. She has been on the faculty at Delaware State University since 2003.

Dr. Kingsberry is a graduate of Douglas College. She holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in social work from Rutgers University.

Billy Thomas is the inaugural vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Thomas is a neonatologist and has been serving as director of the university’s Center for Diversity Affairs.

Dr. Thomas received his medical training at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He also holds a master of public health degree from Tulane University.

Stacey Close, a professor of history, philosophy, and political science at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, is spending the current academic year at Wesleyan University as an American Council on Education Fellow.

Dr. Close, who holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University, is interested in developing recruitment and retention strategies for minority students in STEM fields. The ACE Fellows program is geared toward developing future leaders of American higher education.

In Memoriam: William Hamilton Harris, 1944-2024

Dr. Harris had a long career in higher education leadership, serving as interim or permanent president of five historically Black institutions: Paine College, Texas Southern University, Alabama State University, Fort Valley State University, and Texas College.
