* COURT RULES A LITTLE DISCRIMINATION IS OK: The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago has ruled that a black employee of a manufacturing firm in Indiana was not subjected to a hostile work environment because the company’s offenses were infrequent.
The man claimed that he had been called a gorilla by a supervisor and that a manager told him that he didn’t have to worry about losing his job because the company wanted to appear to be diversified.
The man also claimed that he was not permitted to bring his grandchildren to the office Christmas party but that white employees were able to do so. After eight years with the company, the black employee was permitted to invite his grandchildren to the holiday party. But the company paid for gifts for all the white children who attended the party but did not pay for gifts for the black employee’s grandchildren. The court ruled that the disparate treatment “did not impair his job performance, it happened too occasionally and outside the normal workday to rise to the level of a hostile work environment.”

* RACIAL DIFFERENCES IN BODY WEIGHT BY MARITAL STATUS: A study by researchers at Cornell University, published in the journal Obesity, found that married men tend to be heavier than their unmarried counterparts. But the data showed differences by race and ethnicity. Married black men were significantly more likely to be overweight than never-married black men. But married and never-married white men were equally as likely to be overweight.
For white women, body weight had no correlation to marital status. But black women who had been married but were separated tended to be more than twice as likely to be overweight than married black women.

* RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN EMPLOYMENT RAMPANT IN EUROPE: A report from the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union found that racial discrimination is common against minorities in Europe. The survey found that, while looking for work, 22 percent of all sub-Saharan Africans had been discriminated against at least once in the 12 months prior to the survey. In some countries the reported discrimination was much worse. Some 54 percent of sub-Saharan Africans in Ireland reported job discrimination over the one-year period prior to the survey.
More than four fifths of the people subjected to discrimination did not report it to the authorities.

* SOME PROGRESS IN REDUCING HATE CRIME VIOLENCE IN RUSSIA:
A report from the SOVA Center for Information and Analysis in Moscow finds that hate crime violence in Russia has declined considerably from a year ago. However, the problem of racial violence remains very serious. So far this year, 54 people have been killed in racial violence in Russia. Another 294 people have been injured. In 2008, 105 people were killed and 449 were injured.
