JBHE Study Shows Significant Increase in Black Freshmen at the Nation's Highly Ranked Colleges and Universities --- A report by The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education finds that enrollment of black freshmen at the nation's highly ranked universities and liberal arts colleges continues to rise. Combined, the number of black freshmen at these institutions has increased by nearly 10 percent since 1994. Doctoral Degree Awards to African Americans Reach Another All-Time High --- In 2004 African Americans earned 1,869 doctoral degrees. This number has increased more than 9 percent from a year ago. Black doctorates now stand at the highest level in history. Since 1980 Black Enrollments Have Increased at All But a Few of the Nation's Highest-Ranked Colleges and Universities --- In the mid- to late 1960s the nation's major colleges and universities began to make strong commitments to increase the number of blacks in their student bodies. Over the past quarter-century there have been further gains. Yet there are notable laggards. Almost No Black Economists at the Nation's Highest-Ranked Universities --- A dozen years ago a JBHE survey counted 11 black economists teaching at the nation's 25 highest-ranked universities. Today there are 13 black economists at these 25 leading universities. | |
