Police Department to Offer Full College Scholarships to Black Students in Return for Three-Year Commitment to the Force Upon Graduation

Students in the criminal justice program at Winston-Salem State University, the historically black educational institution in North Carolina, can receive a full scholarship and a book allowance if they agree to join the Winston-Salem police department upon graduation and commit to serving on the force for at least three years. The police department hopes to provide full scholarships for up to four students at Winston-Salem State University each year.

While details are still being worked out, students seeking the scholarships would have to achieve a grade point average of 3.0 during their first two years in college and to pass a criminal background and physical fitness test.
