Henry Louis Gates Jr. Named to University Professorship at Harvard

Henry Louis Gates Jr., who recently stepped down as chair of the Department of African and African-American studies at Harvard University, was named the Alphonse Fletcher Jr. University Professor. Gates is now one of 21 scholars who hold Harvard’s highest faculty position. A University Professorship permits a scholar to teach according to his or her own choice in a wide variety of disciplines.

Professor Gates is a graduate of Yale University. He holds a master’s and Ph.D. from Cambridge University. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1991.
