Two Scholars Named to Department Chairs at Claflin University

Claflin University, the historically Black educational institution in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has announced the appointment of two department chairs.

Robin Dease was named chair of the department of philosophy and religion. She has been serving as the senior pastor of the John Wesley University Methodist Church in Greenville, South Carolina.

Dr. Dease is a graduate of Claflin University and holds a master’s degree in divinity and a doctorate in ministry from the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Alvin Staley was appointed chair of the department of art. For the past 20 years he has taught art at the Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. Previously, he taught art at Voorhees College, Morris College, South Carolina State University, and the Governor’s School for the Arts.

Staley is a 1977 graduate of Claflin College. His wife and two children are also Claflin graduates. He holds a master of fine arts degree from American University in Washington, D.C.
