A Big Jump in the Black Student Acceptance Rate at Oxford

Oxford University in England reports that it accepted 32 Black students this year. This is the highest number of Black students that have been accepted in the past decade.

But don’t jump to the conclusion that the university has jumped aboard the affirmative action bandwagon after Prime Minister David Cameron last spring called the small numbers of Black students at Oxford “disgraceful.” Blacks were 1.3 percent of all students accepted for admission this year. And of the 36,000 students who achieved AAA level ratings for college admission in Britain, 452, or 1.25 percent, were Black.

Fourteen percent of all Black students who applied to Oxford were accepted for admission, compared to 8.8 percent a year ago. Some 24 percent of White students who applied to Oxford were accepted for admission.
